About the Event
Science for Peace welcomes special guest Jamila Raqib, an expert on strategies and tools for nonviolent action from the Albert Einstein Institute. This event brings her insights into conversation with those of SfP’s own Director of Nonviolent Resistance research, Richard Sandbrook.
In the context of increasing militarization and geopolitical uncertainty, the value of nonviolent and nonmilitary civilian defence cannot be underestimated. Especially for Canada, threatened by the Trump administration and committed to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and values of peacekeeping, obtaining nuclear weapons and engaging in arms races is unthinkable. With limited military capacity, our greatest strength and strategies are rooted in nonviolent, nonmilitary civilian defence.
This event centers these topics, and looks even further, evaluating how such strategies can help to prepare for natural and human-made disasters, crucial as climate change continues to add new, and exacerbate existing challenges globally.
